Hamish Porter & the Wonders on Woodland

Hamish Porter stepped out into the bright Woodland St. sunshine.

"I wonder what the east side muggles are up to today!" he thought to himself.

Just then his two very best friends, Mirhiney and Rob Weeblie came running around the corner and smacked right into Hamish.

"Cor, Blimey,"Hamish uttered in that irresistible British way that British people utter, "I think you broke my wand! It was an original from 1973. Where am I going to find that and where am I going to get a mid century dining set, a pole lamp and a fondue set for my meeting with the dark lord, Lord Brooks?"

"I know, let's go to WONDERS ON WOODLAND!" Mirhiney squeaked!

Okay, I'll stop torturing you with my horrible J.K. Rowling impression and just get to the point. Wonders on Woodland is an awesome antique store adjacent to the Weenie Mobile on Woodland. Unlike other "antique malls' and "thrift stores" Wayne and Debbie take the time to find very cool and unique pieces and then also take the time to display them very nicely. They remember you when you come in and they seem to have an uncanny knack of knowing just which piece they have that will uniquely appeal to you as their customer. I have dropped some cash there and would definitely like to drop A LOT more if I had it to throw around wildly. That's not to say that things are too expensive there, no that is just a testament to the variety of coolness there. Personally I am a big fan of Mid Century Modern and they are constantly showcasing items from that period. I recommend going at least once a week because you never know when and where the next cool item they find will show up, and you'll want to jump right on it. My saturday in E. Nashville lately have consisted of Marche in the morning, then Turnip Truck, WONDERS after and then grab a hot dog at I dream of Weenie for lunch. Don't you love it over here?

A Hot Dog and the THREAT of a hot dog.

Saturday I did what is becoming a Saturday habit of mine (when I find the time.)Around 11ish I went to "I Dream of Weenie" (trust me, you don't want to look up that title in Google Images...or maybe you do, I don't judge) and got a Slaw Dog and a Root Beer. I am beside myself that a really good (or any) hot dog place opened up and I am extremely glad it opened here. However, I sorta f'd up and forgot how thoughtful and well intentioned the neighborhood is...read on for more....

Ya see, Saturday was a beautiful cool, non humid day. I was by myself and decided to bring my beagle mix, Ruby, whom I love, with me. She's a barker and she likes to jump up on people because we spoiled the crap out of her, so I left her in the car, windows rolled up (so she wouldn't disturb with her barking) right in front of the Weenie Mobile. My defense, it was NOT hot and I was ONLY going to have her there long enough to ORDER my weenie and take her out on her leash to eat with me.

Well, to my embarrassment, in the middle of my ordering, which wasn't more than 60 seconds from the time I left the dog in the truck, I hear yelled out amongst those lounging and eating their weenies on the lawn..."Hey is this somebody's dog in this truck??" and of course everyone is looking around....

A woman who was walking down the sidewalk saw Ruby in there, and being the good citizen, she let it be known that the window had to be cracked or the dog would die.

Suddenly I feel like everyone looked at me like some monster, though I was already aware of that fact and that her piercing beagle barks could be annoying to the people eating their weenies on the lawn and that in the 90 seconds away from the truck, my Ruby would not be harmed at all. I couldn't stand in line with her on a leash with me at the same time.

So thank you, citizen, for saving my dog and embarrassing me, but I'd rather have people around that pointed that kind of stuff out, rather than not caring about a dog locked up in a truck with the windows rolled up.

The slaw dog (which I like to call the "Sam Peckinpaw") ruled as well.

The Old Radio Cafe

Here's a pic of the Radio Cafe on the corner of 14th and Woodland. As Larry Brinton says, "Word on the Street" is that it's in the process of becoming a place called "Mad Donna's." If anyone knows anything about it, let us know here. We at Hoodspenders have always thought it was a very neat building and when it was the Hot Chicken place experiment they had good chicken...don't know what became of them folks. But anyways, enjoy the pic. You can Click below for a bigger version.

UPDATE - from The Tennessean

Mad Donna's Restaurant and Lounge is aiming for an August opening, said spokesperson Raye Fontenot.

The owners are in the process of transforming the structure at 1311 Woodland (the former Radio Cafe) to accommodate a restaurant downstairs, and a separate bar and entertainment area upstairs.

The restaurant will follow a casual dining concept; salads and appetizers will share space on the menu with steaks, chicken and fish entrees. For the first few months, Mad Donna's will open at 5 p.m. for dinner. Lunch hours may be added later, Fontenot said.

Th owners plan to have some kind of entertainment five nights a week. The types of entertainment have not been decided.

Mad Donna's is hiring for front and back of house positions. To apply, or for more information, send an e-mail to jobmaddonnas@yahoo.com

But anyways, enjoy the pic. You can Click below for a bigger version.
